Teaching

In Spring 2009 I am teaching

  • Math 153 : Introduction to Discrete Mathematics
My Background

Born in England, I moved to South Africa and then Australia with my family. I completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney before coming to the USA for graduate school. I was awarded a Ph.D. in May 2004 by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois , Urbana-Champaign. My PhD advisor was Nigel Boston. From 2004 to 2007 I was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Currently I am a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Smith College.

Research

I work in algebraic number theory and group theory. In particular I'm interested in questions about the structure of certain Galois groups that are associated to arithmetically interesting extensions of number fields. The study of such groups and their representations is an important development in modern number theory and has lead to many advances in our understanding of more classical problems (eg. Fermat's Last Theorem and other Diophantine equations).

I find many other areas/topics in mathematics interesting, particularly those with an algebraic or discrete flavor. I'm also interested in some of the applications of mathematics in modern communication systems including the design of error correcting codes and cryptographic protocols.
