Course Content: An introduction to computer science and computer programming. The programming language C will be taught and used to introduce programming techniques, and students will gain proficiency with the UNIX operating system.

This is the first course in  the Computer Science major.  No previous experience is assumed.

Textbook: The Art of Programming: Computer Science with C, by Steven C. Lawlor, West Publishing Company, 1997.

Course Work: There will be weekly labs and weekly programming projects. You may work with a partner during the lab, but you must do the programming project on your own. Submitted projects must compile.  There is a 10-point penalty for each day that a project is late.  There will also be two exams. The first exam will be an open-book midterm and is scheduled during the lab time on Tuesday Oct. 23.  The second exam will be a closed-book self-scheduled exam during the final exam period.

Course Grade: The programming projects will count for 70% of your course grade, the midterm exam for 15%, and the final exam for 15%.  Attendance may be used to decide borderline grades.

Honor Code: The projects that you submit must be your own work. It is okay to discuss features of C and program design with your classmates. It is not okay to write code together or to copy code from another student's program. It is college policy that you may not share your password with anyone else.  It is a violation of the Honor Code.  Don't hesitate to ask any questions that you may have concerning the honor code!
